College Street

Oil on Canvas, 24" x 20"

April, 1999

A springtime view of College Street near the middle of Burlington, looking west up the hill towards the campus of St. Michael's college. Visible on the right are a local church, the public library, and courthouse; the building on the left is a clothing boutique. Vermont spring doesn't really set in until early May; this dun-colored landscape is typical of the months from February to April.

This picture marked my first attempt at painting cars from life; typically I would block in the rough outlines of a car in each spot, then wait for someone to park and max out the meter before filling in the rest. You can see the process of painting in cars documented in a later 2005 Brooklyn still life.
